Nairobi Snake Park was opened in January 1961 to promote and preserve the snakes and reptiles that are found in Kenya. The snake park was first located at national museum, but later the museum trustees acquired land in front of the museum to establish a reserve live snakes.

There are Community-based programs that give education on aquarium fish and reptiles, snake removal from homes, education to reduce snake bites and snake identification process.
