Nairobi Gallery is a national monument that was built in 1913 to serve as the Native Ministry, and used to be referred as Hatches, Matches, and Dispatches because it was used for recording births, deaths and marriages .Today it is used for holding art exhibits of both local and international artists. The historical structure has also been previously used to serve as a colonial court house, way before independence as well as the office of the Nairobi provincial commissioner. In September 2005, National Museums of Kenya restored the building which today, holds many historical and important pieces of art including Murumbi Collection that includes Gabra and Somali wooden jugs, African postage stamps, folk art from the Rendille and Karamojong and many others. Born 1911 to a Goan trader and a masai-woman, Joseph Murumbi was kenyas second vice president from May 1965 till December 1966. BY 1950S he had amassed a collection of artifacts, postage stamps, jewelry, textiles and rare books.
